Frequently Asked Questions

What locks can you repair?

Monaro Locksmiths and Security services can repair all types of locks such as residential, commercial, government, restricted, master key systems, safes, emergency and many more. Lock manufacturers generally make three classifications of their products and grade them according to their strength and durability. In addition to door locks, we can repair many other types of locks. If you have a question about your particular lock problem, contact us by filling out our contact form or via phone.

Can all my locks be rekeyed, so they all work with just one key?

All your locks can be set to the same key, provided that they all share the same keyway. Try this: Take the key that works in your front, or main door. Try to insert it into the other locks you want to change. If it enters fully and easily, those locks can most likely be set to work with the same key. There are some locks that cannot be rekeyed, but those locks are very rare.

If I lose my keys, do I have to replace all my locks?

Monaro Locksmiths can usually access all of your locks in your home, or commercial building, and re-key them. This is less expensive than replacing the locks. When replacement is required, our extensive inventory and service personnel will have you inside and secure on the same day.

I do not know the combination of my safe, or I have lost my key. Can you open it?

Monaro Locksmiths can do it!  We have technicians who specialise in safe, vault, and safe deposit lock servicing. Whether your particular lock-out is caused by a lost or forgotten combination, our certified safe and vault experts can quickly diagnose and solve the problem.

What’s the difference between standard keys and restricted?

Restricted is higher security which means that keys can only be cut if we are provided with the signature that we have on file which means that this job has to go back to the original locksmith who did the job. Standard keys can be duplicated anywhere. Read more about key controls on Wikipedia.

How do I order a restricted key?

A mandatory form required to be completed by a signatory person who we have on file for your key system. If you are new to the system or have just acquired the property you must call the office as a higher security form will be sent out when the appropriate identification has been provided. Voila – that’s it.

What is the difference between a mechanical and a digital keypad?

Mechanical will have the buttons, no batteries at all, and a turn knob that you need to push the door open. Digital also has a keypad but will automatically release of electric strike on the door frame and this is hardwired into the mains power. You can also have a battery operated digital keypad lock which is run on AA batteries.

Where should the safe be installed?

The safe should be installed closest to the area of its usage. If the safe is used to store jewellery then the master bedroom would normally be used – having your safe secured is what increases the time/friction for criminals, increases the likelihood for them to abandon the task.

Can a safe protect from fire?

Some do and some don’t you will also need to look at the duration a safe will protect your belongings from fire.
